This Junior Course is based on the Mamoli kit, Rattlesnake, but might also work with the Model Shipways kit (MS2028) with careful modifications. This course is actually two courses in one and consists of 18 chapters covering hull construction only. A set of 9 chapters covers out of the box construction while the other set of 9 chapters covers the kitbashed version.
A seperate Masting and Rigging course is also available.
This course introduces the modeler to kitbashing. For each chapter (9 in all), a supplemental chapter on kitbashing procedures is included. This allows the modeler to do whatever level of kitbashing he feels comfortable with.
For total kitbashing, extensive modifications are made to the kit. The hull planking is replaced with a custom wood package. This optional wood package consists of boxwood, holly, ebony and swiss pear. We would like to recommend that you contact Crown Timberyard about obtaining the wood needed for this package. The course gives dimensions for each piece of stripwood that is replaced.
In addition, the plans of the ship drawn by Harold Hahn (see address below) are used to more accurately show how the ship was built. Wood and plans must be purchased separately as well as the kit itself (available at Ages of Sail).
This course is ideal for modelers with some model shipbuilding experience, preferably with more complex models. Because of the kitbashing procedures, much more is covered in this course including carving of the transom details and figurehead.
With this course, the modeler will learn a new method of planking the hull (not previously covered) called painting with wood, how to build deck furniture, how to frame decks using actual framing techniques, how to make ship's boats, carving, and much more.
The optional Masting and Rigging Course will teach the modeler more complexities to making masts and spars, a more complex rigging structure, and how to read model ship plans for final rigging. The course teaches many of the basics of scratchbuilding as well as more complex techniques and is a stepping stone to a total scratchbuild model.
The course comes on a CD. The chapters can be printed out by the customer and put in a 3 ring binder, or you can take the CD to an office supply store such as Staples or Office Max and have them print the chatpers for you.
